As we've mentioned before here in the blog, there's a place for everyone when it comes to the mission of looking after the widows and the orphans. (James 1:27) Perhaps you aren't called to be a foster parent or a case worker, but there are so many other ways you can help! One of those is by becoming certified to babysit for a foster family. That's right. We can't just call up Nancy the neighborhood teenager and ask her to watch our foster kids. There are several rules and regulations around that as well. Most agencies require background checks, training, and for some, CPR certification. The training is not as rigorous as ours, but still, this person is also being chosen to care for children who have been entrusted to the custody of someone other than their biological parents. You can imagine the strain this can put on foster parents. Now imagine if there were certified babysitters right in their very own circle who could step in during unforeseen emergencies and help! (Or just when you need to go to the grocery store by yourself and relish in the quiet of the deli aisle.) Churches and organizations often host certification classes at little to no cost. Research in your area! If you are in the Houston area, one is coming up next month!
Here are the details: Foster Care Babysitter Certification Class February 23rd, 9am – 3pm Church Project (295 Sawdust Rd, Woodlands, TX 77380) Cost: $10/person (lunch provided) Childcare provided by Church Project upon request (additional cost) The class will include Medication/Transportation Training, Trauma-Informed Care Training, CPR/First Aid Certification, and the necessary documentation required for certification.
